"Provide opportunity for excellence and enjoyment through a rich and varied curriculum."

THE CURRICULUM
All pupils study Mathematics, English, Science, Technology, History, Geography, Religious Education, Music, Art and Physical Education. Infants receive 21 hours of teaching per week and juniors 23.5 hours. In addition to academic teaching, communication skills, good manners, self-control and consideration for others are constantly reinforced to build self-confidence. More in depth Curriculum statements are available on request.
Reading
Reading is central to every aspect of the curriculum, our aim is to lead your child to independent reading and what we hope will be a lifelong enjoyment of books and language. All children engage in individual, group and class reads through a variety of texts including reading schemes, story and reference books.
The Reading Diary...
is a record that goes between school and home, along with a reading book and offers the opportunity for an ongoing commentary to develop between home and school about the individual child's reading.
Reading enjoys a high profile at Dodleston and we regularly celebrate reading through events such as annual book week and character costume day among others.
The Home Reading Session...
should be enjoyable, warm, cosy and quiet. Committing to ten minutes uninterrupted, focussed shared, home reading each day will help your child's progress enormously.
The Library...
As well as being used as a library, a quiet area for study and reading, at times throughout the school day the library is utilised as an extra teaching area reducing class sizes and allowing for more one on one time with the class teacher or SEN co. Round about the time of national book week we open up the library to a book fayre so watch out for this in the school calendar.
Physical Education
We have a wide varied P.E. curriculum offering one hour per week of provision with a specialist teacher for both K.S.1 and K.S.2. Our P.E. co-ordinator is extremely enthusistic and ensures Dodleston Primary School are involved in a whole range of inter-school competitions from football to quick cricket. We are always keen for support and help with transport at these times so if you can help out please get in touch with Miss Green.
Sex Education
Sex Education will be in line with the Cheshire Agreed policy and is included in P.S.H.E.. In YR6 children are given a talk about "growing up" by the school nurse in the context of personal hygiene.
Homework
We believe homework helps to establish good working habits, it also allows parents to support children in their work. Weekly homework tasks change depending on the demands of the curriculum at that time, however we endeavour to encourage one hour homework per week, to include literacy, numeracy, reading and spellings for juniors.
HOME SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP
Children learn more effectively when teachers and parents work together and we encourage this partnership. We welcome volunteers to lend a hand in the classroom and Friday Fun Activities have been extremely successful for the children and the parents involved in art, craft, cooking and I.C.T. activities. We have an open door policy at Dodleston and strongly encourage you to discuss any concerns with the class teacher as soon as they arise. After school is better than early morning however for a more serious concern please don't hesitate to make a formal appointment where the class teacher can give you their full attention.
ASSESSMENT
Your child's progress is assessed throughout the year and as well as teacher assessment at Dodleston we use SATs and NEFR tests to help us track your child's progress. In the summer term all years part-take in school, county or national tests and results are reported back to parents. YR2 teacher assessment and YR6 test results are published in the School Profile, and our annual governor's newsletter.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Gifted children and those with specific learning difficulties are identified as early as possible. The class teacher has responsibility for special needs but is strongly supported by the Sen CO and the TA. External support is available where necessary to ensure every child has access to the curriculum on offer and Dodleston will ensure we do everything we can to help every child access the learning available at our school.
CARE AND DISCIPLINE
We provide the level of care we believe any responsible parent would give, with good manners and courtesy the foundation of our "code of conduct". The school is divided into four houses- Balderton, Bretton, Gorstella and Kinnerton. Good work or behaviour, effort and consideration for others are all praised and rewarded with house points to re-inforce responsibility to others. Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals are awarded throughout the year. Weekly Good work assemblies celebrate special endeavour where the merit medal is awarded. At the end of every year we have the End of Year Prize Giving Ceremony where we celebrate a range of achievements across the spectrum of education. Through this positive approach to discipline, we promote personal responsibility and a caring attitude towards others in the school.
PARENTS EVENINGS Twice a year you have the opportunity to come and discuss your child's progress. We also have a number of Open Days throughout the year where Parents/Grandparents and other family and friends are welcome to come along.
LUNCH
At time of writing school lunches cost £1.85 and include healthy well balanced main and desert courses. Packed lunches are also an option.
