Dear webmaster,
I and a friend visited your village today (30/08/08) and had a very good time visiting the local pub, the church and the Motte and Bailey, (thanks to Mr John Shanklin) plus the local autumn fair.

I include a few photo's that you might like to put on your site.

Well, were finally moving into our cottage in Dodleston! Exciting stuff... I am surprised that there is no mention of the Dodleston Computer mysteries on this site, the village was quite famous during the early to mid eighties because of it! mat ____________________________________

Just a note to say how much we enjoyed the pantomime last Saturday. Everyone involved should be congratulated on such a brilliant and hilarious production. This sort of thing brings our village together and I think we should give a big vote to thanks to everyone involved. Looking forward to next year !!! ____________________________________

Hello Dodleston, what a great site, good to see and read about the place I grew up and made life long friends. I pass through quite frequently, the place has hardly changed on the surface. I will make regular visits to the site. Great work keep it up. ____________________________________

As is tradition at this special time of year for many that I’ve grown up with and around, Christmas has become more of quality time with those that we love, more of refreshing bonds of friendship and more of a pilgrimage to the place we all hold in our hearts as home, Dodleston, rather than about prezzies.

As is ritual, food and booze and loads and loads of booze accompanied by even greater amounts of dirty filfy booze hold the basis for most of our festivities; but for about thirty or so people on the stroke of midnight Christmas Eve, something far greater was here to behold.

It was whilst departing from Dodleston’s Mecca (The Red Lion) on the eve of Christmas 2007 that we felt compelled to get involved in the service that was in progress in one of the few but most beautiful landmarks of our home that is St Mary's Church, Dodleston.

Having been welcomed into the Church late (sorry), we were able to get stuck right in and promptly, with the help of the totally sound gent on the back row, joined in the singing of a really quite jazzy hymn, the name of which escapes me.

Whilst in attendance, further heart felt singing and rejoicing was enjoyed along with some group recital/chanting and a good twenty minutes of listening and learning about the current revs time as a postman or something.

With this in mind, I wanted to give thanks to the lovely lady patron of Dodleston's Mecca (The Red Lion, Dodleston) for not shouting at me, thanks to all who sail in her both familiar and new faces. For accommodating our boozing needs with shots of vodka and lime, the port and the selection of cheese that was enjoyed, along with all the pints, thanks to Shaun and Joe and the other staff too!

Please accept our particular and honest thanks to the true gent that ushered us into Church. Thanks to the congregation, those that enjoyed it, those that were there in support of their families and friends that we understand this time of year means something special too, the choir (all three of them) and even to the people who moved seats to errrm… accommodate us in St Mary’s that evening in the true spirit of Christmas, Christianity and the Samaritans making us feel most welcome.

The manner in which we were received into both of these the institutions was beyond all of our expectations and I hope that the extra few quid collected at Church makes some sort of a difference to a worthy cause somewhere. The evening certainly helped to make travelling from both near and far this Christmas worthwhile.

I hope you all have had a Merry Christmas and of course have a happy and fruitful 2008.

Its a bit far for me to come and check but hopefully one day I will. Thank you for a very interesting view of Dodleston. Pam ____________________________________

Just wanted to say what a lovely meal I had there on Saturday with my family of seven! We received a warm welcome, such a high level of customer service from every member of staff and of course 1st class food. Everyone had a great time and no doubt we will be back soon for a Sunday lunch. I have not received service like it for a long time and just wanted to reward the staff with my thanks.

I am trying to find the ancestors of my husband's great great grandmother Anne Griffith, who according to the census, was born in Dodleston c1842. She married George Davies, a wheelwright from Lavister, in 1869 in Birkenhead and according to her marriage certificate, her father was James Griffith, a labourer. I have been unable to trace her prior to 1869 and would be grateful for any information. Thank you

I am tracing my ancestors the Saladine family who lived in the Dodleston area from c.1700-c.1900. I have visited Dodleston several times - what a beautiful church and village :-)
A message for Marc who is researching the Wainwrights - I think they must have been friends/associates of the Saladines as they witnessed a couple of their wills. Martha Wainwright witnessed my 3xgt grandmother Elizabeth Saladine's will in 1843.
Any information on the Saladines would be greatly appreciated :-)
Thanks

Hello.I would like to say how kind and friendly the people of Dodleston are. My visits to the post office and village store were very entertaining and the owners are very helpful and generous with their time as well as having a fantastic sense of humour. They have sent us numerous gifts of English chocolates and Peter's pick'n'mix over the past few years for which myself and John are extremely grateful (although the sour flavoured refresher bars they send john are causing some trouble as he loves watching the local kiwi's faces when he shares them!!(very cruel)). If you are able, could you possibly ask them to send some jammi dodgers next time as they are not available over here. thankyou very much. Julie.

PS..If it is at all possible when you next go to the post office could you also ask my mum and dad if they could send me some garibaldi biscuits in their next package to New Zealand as well please. thankyou very very much. Julie . ____________________________________

I was introduced to Dodleston via your web page by a co-worker and former resident. How lucky you are to live in such a beautiful place. My friends and I think it must be very much like life in Midsomer or St. Mary Mead (absent the murder and mayhem of course). Although I've never been to the UK I would very much like to see your village sometime in the future. Until then I'll be content to enjoy Dodleston's history and current events via the internet. Thank you for sharing your home with those of us across the pond. ____________________________________

Congratulations - very nice website. Until 1970 I lived in Rossett and have fond memories from the late 1950's/early 60's of playing snooker in Dodleston Village Hall - think it might have been called the 'Village Institute'then. There were two tables; a full-size one with proper overhead lighting and a smaller one on which we lads used to play. The older men didn't like us playing on the best table in case we ripped the cloth. That suited us as you had to put a shilling in to switch on the lights on the best table ! Also good times had attending the Youth Club which was held in the School. ____________________________________

happy memories. Revisited many times since
and always meet up with good friends,
most recently August 2002 at the Flower
Festival - well done Pat!

I'm currently living in the US, but I spent
my entire life in Chester and visiting your
site was a refreshing trip into nostalgia lane.
My precious little daughter - Melissa -
attends your school, and being able to see
where she spends part of her life is
wonderful! :)   Hi Missy!

I loved visiting this site as I am currently
in the UK having nostalgic visits to the
places where I spent my younger days.
I was a frequent visitor to Chester and
the surrounding countryside prior to
emigrating to New Zealand in 1966.
Thank you Percy.

Not much here yet, well, nothing at all,
but do feel free to leave any comments
you wish as long as they are decent.
